Observation 2/20/2025 by Jasper W local_see

Snow Obs. Colden

Cruciflyer

Date & Time 2/20/2025 alternate_email 10:00 AM
Location Cruciflyer
Elevation & Aspect 3000 / Northwest
Mode of Travel Skiing/Snowboarding
Red Flags Shooting Cracks, Whumpfing/Collapsing, Drifting Snow / Windloading

Observation Details

Whumphing and cracking as we approached the slide. Dug a pit at the base, ECT 15 with full propagation 50 cm down. Another layer popped at ECT 23, also full propagation ~70 cm down. None of the slabs slid off during the test but the ECT 15 layer sheared with very little pressure from the shovel behind the column, Q1 shear. Total pit depth was 140 cm. This was not all the way to the ground. The walls were pretty uniform hardness, the big shear happened on a layer that we assumed to be the new/old snow interface from this last storm. We decided not to ski the line.
