Triggered Avalanche

Wet/Loose

D2: Could bury, injure, or kill a person.

Ski cut triggered wet loose slide in a treed chute that entrained a considerable amount of snow and carried into the woods below. The bottom of the fan was ~50ft wide and slide on the new/old snow interface.

Observation Details

When digging to ground on this aspect it became apparent that in most places this most recent snow fell on bare rock. There was a thin layer of slush on the ground from the beginning of the storm underlying the drier snow that fell later in the storm cycle. As we descended in the afternoon the air temperature was rising and the snow changed rapidly below about 3500ft. It was significantly more wet and dense.
