Triggered Avalanche

Slab

D1: Relatively harmless to people.

This “avalanche” was extremely small and just big enough to carry me. But at a high rate of speed 200 feet into rocks and trees.

Observed Avalanche

Slab

D1: Relatively harmless to people.

Very small and deceptive, this slide broke my back and almost crippled me.

Observation Details

Observed very small slides occurring on steep slopes. Noted that the snow cover was roughly 3 inches deep and beneath was solid ice. Attempted to navigate a short stretch of steep hillside in order to save time/distance on my trip. Was having difficulty digging spikes from crampons in, but made enough purchase to make headway. made it 50 feet before a 12 by 10 slab of ice gave away and slid into a ravine carrying me roughly 200 feet down. Attempts to self arrest were unsuccessful as ice axe would not dig in.
